Motion sensors are a very useful part of home automation system. They allow us to turn light on automatically when someone enters the room. Home automation system will send command to the SMART SWITCH asking it to turn light on when motion is detected in the room. Of course the ambient light conditions are taken into consideration. Smart home system is aware of Sunset and Sunrise times. Using these conditions we can turn lights on only when needed. System will turn lights OFF when motion is not detected after 2 minutes. That is when AUTOMODE is active.
While we do use sunrise and sunset conditions for light automation to make system smarter, there is even a better way. We use smart multi sensors to give us more than just information about motion in the room. The home automation system will continue receiving updates about ambient light conditions. We use that information to decide whether to turn light ON when there is motion in the room. Nothing will happen if there is enough ambient light.
Our driveway is really steep, narrow and dark. That is why we love our lights along the driveway. We use light automation to helps us save energy and have well lit driveway on demand. Driveway lights are scheduled to turn ON with sunset and turn OFF with sunrise every day. Customer can control them manually as well.
You can implement light automation in every room. In our case the bathrooms in our house have no windows. Therefore lights will turn ON automatically every time motion is detected and light automode is ON. Unlike the other rooms, the bathrooms have longer timeout for lights to turn OFF. Also, the level of light will differ depending on the time of the day. When we go to the bathroom during the day, smart dimmer switch will be set to 100%. We don’t want same settings when we wake up in the middle of the night to use bathroom. So after 10 pm dimmer will be set to 25%. That is enough light for us at night!
In some cases motion sensors are useless for light automation. Pantry or small closet will have all walls covered with shelves. In most cases we don’t even enter the room to trigger motion sensor. Perfect situation to use doors sensors. We use hidden smart door sensors and time of the day to control the light.
Customer can go beyond basic light ON – Light OFF scenarios. Light automation can help you stay informed. Let’s say we have a nice home theater setup in our basement. The use of smart LED TV back light is helping to relieve eye strain. It is set to soft white color while watching TV. I enjoy watching movies and I very much enjoy good sound as well. Usually the volume is set fairly high. There is no way for me to hear someone coming home when watching TV. I will sure notice when back light changes color and flashes couple of times.
